3shape Study Group • Let’s Change Dentistry Together
Welcome to 3Shape Study Group!
Our mission is to be your go to source for quick, easy, and FREE help with anything related to 3Shape Dental System or the Trios Intraoral Scanner.
We know digital dentistry can be tough, and like a lot of technicians and dentists, I know I struggled managing all the ins and outs of moving from conventional to digital dentistry. I still do!
That is where this group comes in. As of this writing, we have more than 30,000(!) members from over 235 countries that can help you with whatever it is you can’t quite figure out. We invite you to post your cases, workflows, comments, and photos as we all work together to help one another!
The best part? It’s free!
The admins/mods of this group work hard to keep it free of ads, trophy posting, and anything unrelated to our singular focus: That no one should have to struggle at their desk figuring out how to finish a case for a client! Enjoy!
Deleting order will put order into windows bin? Can we get this? In case someone accidentally click delete and goodbye humanity forever… ... See MoreSee Less
You can allready adjust setting in CP deleting case in database but keep files.
It would be valuable to have the ability to place case numbers in the denture positioning guide. From time to time we get modeless cases and this would help to match them to a pan. ... See MoreSee Less
Bring the guide into copy denture add the name , but yeah it could be easier if it was automated
I always write the name of patient on the outside rim of puck when I do my nesting!
Could you show me order form that case? Thanks you so much
Seriously, half the time I copy/reopen cases all the additional scans lose their alignment. Sometimes I spent a hell of a long time align things (can we please have alignment functionality in 3d viewer???) so it is highly vexatious. Look at this bouquet of sadness below. ... See MoreSee Less
Omg, this is annoying as hell honestly as well when you open and your alignment just disappear completely
We need it ASAP🙏🙏 Just the complete additional scan tool in 3D viewer will save us so many ghost orders and so much time
Rafael Galiakberow Samir Zubcevic
This has been really annoying.
UI/UX: 3Shape Unite Store only letting the user install all updates at once is very limiting. Maybe I want to update one module but hold off on updating other modules due to known issues with the latest version.
Should let the user install updates individually. By all means, also give the option to install all for convenience too.
Apple App store on MacOS is clearly the inspiration behind 3Shape Unite Store. At least copy the good features too! ... See MoreSee Less
Can we get a copy and append that only saves the outside surface of everything? Right now it appends as a bunch of discreet objects that causes all sorts of annoyances. I run it every single time through meshmixer to flatten it all. ... See MoreSee Less
It would be so cool to be able to add additional s scan and have the possibility to align them when using trios.
Most of the time when I want to do this I have to duplicate the case and then I export manually.
Like when I want to scan a prep under a partial removable
Prep without partial
Prep with partial
… I hope it makes sense for you too. ... See MoreSee Less
Thank you for feedback Alexandre. This is for sure quite high on our list 🙂
Yes! We need it asap!:) And the 3shape viewer functionality builtin in trios/implant studio as well. Would make it way more functional and would make more sense with some full digital protocols!:)
Multiple bite function without duplicating the case would be very useful
This is probably the 3rd time I'm suggesting this, we need the full denture tooth moving tools in Crown and Bridge. The blue dot, the arrows being available from cranial view. ... See MoreSee Less
Ditto & same 💯
But does that limit things in regards to anatomy for reuse?
Would be great if we had a tool for the 2D cross section similar to the arch spline in implant studio where you can set a spline for the cross section to follow, then i could just scrub through my immediate proposed extractions and ridge reductions quickly to make sure I'm prepping the virtual model properly rather than dragging and rotating the cross section every few mm to check. ... See MoreSee Less
Like panoramic curve in implant studio.
It would be really nice if we could use the morphing tool instead of just wax knife in the sculpt on model after the digital extraction. Takes way to much time really dialing in your extraction points for immediate dentures
Would also be nice to have the possibility to rotate the view in 2d crossection and viewer
We do a lot of copy denture and then new impression inside the copy to make the new ones. It would be great if there was a feature to remove like 2mm of material inside the copy denture in the design stage before milling/printing to make room for the impression material. Right now we grind and grind.... ... See MoreSee Less
Hi, Chris, thank you for the suggestion, we'll see what can be done. For now you can use blocking wax to add 2mm to the scan. Set 2mm, it's 4mm by default, limit on Sculpt blocking wax and add wax manually
Is it possible to get the stippling tool in the fixed workflows. It would be great to be able to paint the tissue on an All-On-X for stipple.
As someone has said on here before, "All tools in all situations" (Minh Tran). ... See MoreSee Less
Export when finished import into copy denture and paint/create is the current work around
It would be super handy if we could switch implant component on the go...without modifiying order etc....You go over scan body aligment and then, watch out, you can, based on implant coordinates, try different ti bases, MUA's, angulated MUA's, different height and what stays selected it's choosen in order automatically...for instance so annoying to align scan flags, go into design, see that height or angle is off, go back to order, reproduce steps till design again etc...
It would be super cool find out in 3Shape which component we need without try&error...use them, order is automatically modified...And push library manufacturers to use also REF numbers.... ... See MoreSee Less
Yes for sure! Trios design studio has this and it's amazing.
Scanned cases modifying works when I modify a digital impression it typically crashes
Totally Agree Scan - identify the implant platform coordinates. Then choose parts for the restoration based off design.
Expert mode.. 🙏😂
yes this would be fantastic!
With Mark Smith 's permission I'll post a video of trios design studio switching implant components
Feast your eyes on the this: Trios design studio with implants. So pretty.
Wouldn't it be nice if there as a button to set the current design as the initial starting point and delete all design history? This will speed up the full arch cases because you won't have to wait for the redesign when you go back to change one margin, for example, and come back to design. Manipulation the 'Anatomy for reuse' folder is cumbersome. ... See MoreSee Less
Yes, good idea. Especially if you send the Doc 2 designs, make the 1st the starting point and the 2nd the end of the design. If he choses 1st, just undo all, if he choses 2nd, then it'll open that one.
Great idea 👍
Fantastic idea that is probably doable. In fact….
Great idea! It would be nice if it automatically updated the antaglio surface when modified as well instead of just the bite. Too many steps required.
Love the ideal.
Oooooo get on it 3shape!!!!
Whoa. I think my mind just broke in half
Such a good idea!! 😁😁😁
Hello i am looking for a trios 3 black and white , contact me pls ... See MoreSee Less
would be cool is the undo feature had a date and time for each step. sometimes you open a case from the day before and do a bunch of stupid shit you regret and want to revert to yesterdays design, but don't know where you started. ... See MoreSee Less
You are spending too much time thinking about things. Try less clicks and less minutes. Sometimes it’s a you problem and not a software problem 😂😂😂
Save a backup copy of your anatomy folder. And modeling tree file. Then you can always go back.
And the idea makes sense, noted
Dear 3Shape, can we or could we get AUX tool also in 3D preview? Sometimes it would be nice to be able to export some parts of case directly without going into opening case... ... See MoreSee Less
Hi, Ales. What is AUX tool? And what is the need to export only some parts of the case? And what parts are exactly are we talking about?
Yesss this! So many phantom orders just to align scans... If 3d preview had additional scans that would be very sweet.
Can we just get rid of the dongle somehow??? I hate carting that thing around when I am doing trainings or on vacation. Having to overnight it because I forgot the stupid thing. What is the point!?
Interesting - do we have usb requirements in our specs for PC?
Agree but in the meantime get usb server and VPN…
Use an usb hub 👻
But dongles are so 2019 😂
Minh, I have a solution 😌
Yes! If they are listening…. We need an accurate solution for aligning CBCT and iOS scans for design fabrication of surgical guides, immediate provisionals, and final hybrids. asap🙏🏼
I’d love a tool like this…
An open source CAD program-Freeform has my favourite tool- “Layer” you activate the part, select tool size, select layer thickness, and then “add”
It makes it super easy to bulk up one area on a part vs another.
Example: one of my DR likes a “bulky” lingual portion of the tray but a slim buccal area. A tool like this would be great. ... See MoreSee Less
Could we have “Digital impression” as an option for the “3D bite plate” in workorder? ... See MoreSee Less
Can be possible to change the color of the model on Implants copy bridge, please ! gray maybe , that yellow is something else . Thanks ... See MoreSee Less
It would be nice if we had a reduction coping tools in the next version. ... See MoreSee Less

Cerec Connect still needs improvements. The file success has improved but there is still a problem when additional scans are added to the Cerec file before the doctor sends the file. It seems the problem is with 3Shape’s interpretation of these scans. Can we super pretty please have an option to always generate an STL no matter what the manufacturing process is set to? I would love to crank out a CAM5 and an STL for every case.
Examples of why this matters:
You have an ivoclar mill and a roland mill and don't know which one you will use for each case so you want the flexibility
You don't know if you will press or mill emax
You are going to print a denture first and then potentially mill it also.
Would be an easy fix, but would be really nice.
Thanks! ... See MoreSee Less
Also if the the Copy Reuse Cad can always pull from the stl monoblock it would make aligning much easier if there is a new bite!!
This is my favorite feature of Exocad and 3Shape neeeeedddss it!
I believe that you can no? If you set the manufacturing type to Cam 5 and afterwoods you generate the manufacturing and visualisation output don't you have a Cam 5 and an STL? No sure of what I'm saying
Hello everyone. In my honest opinion, I think 3shape is a great software to design, it gives you freedom and if you know how to, you can design everything.
But that doesn’t mean there is no room for improvement. In my daily routine, some options I would love to be included to make life easier are :
1-When morphing to waxup scan, I’d like to have a finish line , the same as when you copy a tooth from prep scan. Sometimes waxups are with gingiva and we have to make a lot of manually adjuatments just because the software morphs the tooth also to the gingiva. also the quality of morphing to be more sharp ??
2-When desiging cases more than 1 unit, I’d love to have an option that doesn’t let teeth overlap each other(it can be checked or unchecked same as sculpt on protected surface), it can be good for contact points but also not to have so much work figuring out each mesial and distal area for ex . 24 single units( some technicians might know how much work this needs.)
3-How about having the option to lock some certain areas of the tooth while designing , it can be done with painting for example,or by drawing a line, and we know that we are not doing anything to that part of tooth. Sometimes to fix something we go and change something we don’t want to and the shape changes drastically. It is a 3D design but we have 2D control over them , not the same as keeping the crown in your hands.
4-Wax knife for minus to have options of tool shapes ?
Maybe none of them is possible, but as a suggestion group I though to share my thoughts.

Way too many times I got a request from dentists to include pano screen shot with case.

Can we have the occlusal plane of the virtual articulator match the position of the occlusal plane we set in the Model Analysis step? Happens often to us as well. Doctor calls: did you receive my scan? I look it up in 3ShapeCommunicated portal (website), quality is crap, can't see a thing. Go to DentalSystem, wait for ages for the case to load in 3D preview, can't see margins. Have to accept the case and open it and go through all the initial steps just to see if there's a margin. Combined with the re-sellers telling doctors "don't mark the margins, the lab prefers to do it"...

Scanning multiple units for Atlantis using the same scan body is a completely horrible experience, whatever you changed, can you please change it back to 2016 ... See MoreSee Less
#DentalTechTip: use globs of blutak and knead them into cylinders that are roughly the same height as the atlantis scan bodies, then place them in each implant site and use that as your pre-scan, highlight, and swap scan bodies from site-to-site as needed
The tooth removal part of implant studio is absolutely dire. No bandaid tool, no ability to sculpt the tissue. God forbid there is a black triangle or more than one tooth in a row. I've given up on it. I import the scans into a fake order in dental designer, remove the teeth there and export again. Every tool in every indication anyone? ... See MoreSee Less
Also, to allow a change of indication at any time would be nice.
Also, if I could add, it's extra annoying because when you remove a tooth it would be nice to go back and forth with the ct scan to see if you exo you did is reasonable. Too much and your guide with get hung up on bone, too little and the guide will be unnecessarily thin. Now I sometimes have to go back and forth around two different programs and amend the implant studio design to the new models everytime.
And adding a virtual tooth is a pain where you don’t want an implant but need one added to see what sizes spaces etc etc
Adam Stoot 3Shape
We completely recognize the shortcomings of the tooth-removal step, and this is on our list of areas to revisit.

Totally agree!!! I asked it couple of weeks ago... Only reactions was use windows snapshot...
I'm a dentist using ImplantStudio for all my implant planning. With the latest update I cannot make virtual bridge, just virtual crown. Could it be possible to bring back the bridge option in planning?
The only way around currently seems to put virtual crown everywhere but I have to place implants under every tooth. So it create a guide with guide tubes colliding or not being use. With multiple single virtual crown, I'm also unable to move multiple unit together so it become much more work to create these crown in the right position.
Also I would like to be able to send my planning with the virtual teeth to an external lab so they could finalized my design and make an interim printed or milled immediate prosthesis.
Maybe I need Dental system to do what I would like, but I won't be using much of it apart from the virtual bridge option that was in ImplantStudio prior to Unite upgrade. ... See MoreSee Less
I am struggling with the same thing! I just started designing the virtual crowns as temp on prepared in dental designer, combining it with additional scans and importing it in implant studio as a preprep. Not as nice as before, but it does have the benefit that if I need to do an immediate temp or even the final down the road, I can convert the design easily.
I posted about this a month ago and no one responded btw
Birk Ploennigs (adam is not on)
Hi all, my apologies for that error in the software. We are aware of it and working on a solution. I will get back to you tomorrow with an update on the time line.
Hi all, Also sorry from my side about this issue. We have some weeks ago released a temporary fix. When selecting the Implant Studio action, it is possible to add additional virtual crowns (besides the one(s) under the implant(s)) by selecting the single restorations and "crown on prep" - these will be treated as additional virtual crowns. Virtual crowns placed next to each other will act as a virtual bridge, and can be scaled together. A proper fix, where multiple virtual crowns can be added while placing the implant, will be released during the summer, but at least the full functionality is available now using the "crown on prep". Hope this helps!
We used to have this bug upto the DS20 and I wished it would never be fixed but it's gone in the DS21. Can you add this 'No shine' as an option in the future DS? I find it much easier to see the margins with the matt color compared to the shiny color scan. This bug happens when you 'Save' the scan using the 'Addition scans' and 'Load' it back to the order. Pretty simple. This was a HAPPY BUG for me. 🙂 Now I have to 'Save' the scan using the 'Additional scans', then create a new order form using the 'Design Module: DentalDesigner 2020', Open the order, then go through the usual process to create he matt version. 🙁 It's too time consuming. I want this bug back as a new feature!! ... See MoreSee Less

Am I missing something? Once you set up the order as milled base and milled teeth for example, the CAM output will be CAM5 for all of that, plus CAM5 for monoblock, plus 2 STL's for printing monoblock. So, why would you need that?
We also need those option for copy denture.
Yeah I hate that glitch. The stl that 3shape generates there sometime gets funky with the monoblock.
what an amazing library of teeth you are using! where to get it?

Paint surface to protect: I know it's been requested here a few times before by many users. But I'll toss it in here again.
Very often, when working on a case like this copy denture with a wash, it would be nice to paint the teeth and cervicals to protect those surfaces from sculpting... and if i want to smooth away excess impression material, or maybe get a bit more artistic with sculpting the base, I can do it a bit more haphazardly without worrying about my teeth.
Not only for this application, but for a few other indications that would really benefit from locking a surface to protect it from my fat-finger tool use ... See MoreSee Less
paint and lock the margins so we can remove tissue.
If scan abutments code for “implant position” why can the system not allow for restoratively driven abutment planning for screw retained restorations.
It would be preferable to design the restoration and select through available abutment systems for that implant system from Any manufacturer DME to make the best choice of abutment from a restorative space, emergence, analog choice, model design etc.
Guessing from digital scans to select parts from limited catalogs is far from ideal. It either decreases outcome or wastes time.
This change would also improve model builder.
Systems with analogs you or your account prefer could be chosen for the model work, abutments chosen for the best clinical result.
The data is all there.
This would be brilliant. ... See MoreSee Less
Curious why there is a limit to 10 additional scan files in an order is it a resource thing or???? ... See MoreSee Less
It will overload DS and self destruct.
Probably some variable that has an arbitrary limit of memory allocation
You really tested this?! Good to know!😄
Hm... what could be the reason to have more than 10 scans? And how many are needed? And you're correct, it's all about resources. One TRIOS scan has ~500 000 triangles. 15 scans(2 jaw scans+bite+2 pre-prep scans + 10 additionals scans) in total will have ~750000 triangles. Adding more might decrease fps to a very low values I'm not sure if the most beautifull 3D games have such amount of triangles at the same time drawn in the scene. Because a lot of different techniques are used there for optimisation. E.g LOD(Level of Detail) is a technique of reducing mesh complexity as objects become more distant from the viewer.) developer.arm.com/documentation/102496/0100/Level-of-Detail---LOD

It always changes the value of the text depth into a positive value, so instead of embossing the text, it becomes positive. Thumb up for B4D. Incredibly fast software improvement.
Blender for dental is the only dental software that teaches you about meshs and how to use meshs how to correct mesh. editing verticies and faces.. 3 shape has been out for over 20 years and doesn't teach any of their technicians nor any of their 3rd party technicians about mesh meshes and how a mesh can become distorted from an oral scan or from a desktop scanner And how to fix those meshes so that the 3 shapes software doesn't lock up on you when you're doing a big case. Again blender for dental is the only dental CAD software true CAD software that educates you on how to fix mesh verticies. 3shape none exocad teach you any of that. 3 shaped came out in I think 2007 2008 and it wasn't until what 20 years later they finally have a mesh correctioning. 3 shape is just a graphical user interface to make it easy for anybody to design any type of case you don't even have to be a certified dental technician you can be somebody off the street and make any type of Crown or case using 3 shape. So what I'm saying is you need less experience to use X ocad or 3 shapes software then you do blender you need more cad experience and understanding from a engineering standpoint.
Rafael Galiakberow coming out swinging, I love it!!!!!! 🙂
This is pretty cool!
Can we have all the refine functionality in model builder 🙏 ... See MoreSee Less
Germen Versteeg, it depends on how important is it for dentures workflow. Don't you get scans with already inverted normals and with improved boundaries after designing dentures? Please tell 3Shape what problem will it solve for you. Why do you even design digital models in your workflow?
Hi there! I don't know if someone has said it before, but wouldnt it be COOL to be able to use the mirror tool even on simple dyes..? ... See MoreSee Less
The "mirror tool" wouldn't apply to frames because there is no set ratio for pontic size. It also doesn't apply to temps because of the same fact that there is little margin data.
This might have been suggested but what about turning the 3D Preview into a web viewer where we can create a link to send to dentist? ... See MoreSee Less
my3dlink.com I think this is the best option until 3shape adds in something natively
To show your design you mean? You can do this threw 3shape communicate
I think 2022 will have it
To make life really easy can we have the align to bite and additional scan option added to 3D viewer so we can get rid of the ghost orders🙏🙏 ... See MoreSee Less
Dummy orders take too much space and time. I agree.
Samir Zubcevic please align use case with Germen Versteeg next week😊
It would be very helpful to be able to refine normal models (I know you can import them as digital impression), but it would make us gain some time if this option was available for every type of scans directly ... See MoreSee Less
Not only that but also being able to prepare a watertight model for printing. We cut the bases off of all watertight scans and run them through model builder as digital impressions. Would be faster if we didn't have to do that additional step.
It would be great if you could rotate a CT scan in the crop stage of Implant Studio. ... See MoreSee Less
Can we drop the lingual green line on upper and lower bicuspids? I think the step is too big and we had a handful of people complain about it when I didn't alter it. ... See MoreSee Less
I always sculpt the linguals of the anteriors to cover more
Yes great idea, we always have to fill that gap
We also had complaints when forgotten 😊
Please add the sculpt step before trimming the scan, that would be a big help. ... See MoreSee Less
In the words of Minh Tran . It's almost like we need all tool's available at all times.. 🙃
A denture base collision warning please, I sometimes forget to check. I get warned about the green line on the teeth every time, lol. ... See MoreSee Less
looks like you need to open the bite 🙂
Medit software assigns different colours for different scans. Can we have this option for the additional scan? It is difficult to control the visibility sliders when I have many additional scans because I have to hover over the sliders to see the name of the files. ... See MoreSee Less
After all the years we have been working with 3shape and IOS orders I wonder this ....
Why is there not a provision when we align ScanBodies to SCULPT the model once we have the alignment completed.
We all know if there is not an emergence scan the smart thing to do is to copy the scan locator scan and MAKE one so we can sculpt this prior but it seems like such a simple and intuitive fix.
I get why we can't just sculpt the working model on the fly but at this step there is nothing done in the design tree that will be affected. ... See MoreSee Less
Generally speaking sculpt should always be the first tool available to clean ios scans and remove artifacts before trimming the borders
It’s almost as if we needed… any tool… at any time 🤓
Dear god. You said it
Can we get a reduction jig for carded teeth. Milled and printed teeth are fine, but aesthetically a carded, layered, cross-linked denture tooth is much better looking.
Having a printable jig that we can use to quickly zip off any denture teeth for setting into a printed or milled base would make it a much more viable digital production method. ... See MoreSee Less
There are some patents surrounding this from various companies, wouldn't be surprised if that's the reason why it isn't available. You can use the option for base + teeth with basal reduction, print the denture base with tooth sockets and the holes that penetrate through it and then reduce manually after placing the carded teeth in that denture base
I was more thinking about a way undermilled base. Glue the teeth in and then the machine mills away. Tooth base will be visual at the end, but it doesn't matter.
Model maker is a great feature. Is there any possibility to adding a Tag to the created model ? If not, could this be developed ?
Thanks ... See MoreSee Less
Tag as in name?
Can we get a final sculpt for monoblock dentures? For cases like this, where we want to pick up temp cylinders for a try-in, punching holes using the parametric shapes>cylinder hole would make things much quicker than having to bring this into copy denture
Or sometimes when we finish the monoblock, there's a spot I see that just needs to be sculpted a bit, but often I won't bother because going back to sculpt teeth/gingiva will throw the coupling step and waste so much time re-calculating the assembly even though there's no assembly for monoblocks ...
