3shape Study Group • Let’s Change Dentistry Together
Welcome to 3Shape Study Group!
Our mission is to be your go to source for quick, easy, and FREE help with anything related to 3Shape Dental System or the Trios Intraoral Scanner.
We know digital dentistry can be tough, and like a lot of technicians and dentists, I know I struggled managing all the ins and outs of moving from conventional to digital dentistry. I still do!
That is where this group comes in. As of this writing, we have more than 30,000(!) members from over 235 countries that can help you with whatever it is you can’t quite figure out. We invite you to post your cases, workflows, comments, and photos as we all work together to help one another!
The best part? It’s free!
The admins/mods of this group work hard to keep it free of ads, trophy posting, and anything unrelated to our singular focus: That no one should have to struggle at their desk figuring out how to finish a case for a client! Enjoy!

I was looking at getting a t-scan (tekscan) for integration of full arch cases. Seems that this technology could easily be adopted into the 3shape software and scanner. Would be an invaluable tool to add to digital articulation. Full arch cases would become a slam dunk! ... See MoreSee Less

Way too many times I got a request from dentists to include pano screen shot with case.
It would be nice of 3shape to automatically include if in surgical report.
... See MoreSee Less
Yes please. When I plan my own cases I have to screen shot. If I farm it out to Scan can I don’t have it available…also it would be nice when we cut teeth to fit guide tubes a report would be automatically generated that says which teeth to ext, where to shave so we remember….I may or may not have ext wrong tooth before then free handed
Would it be possible to have an easy way in Trios were we could create demo cases library from our cases to show patient? Maybe an app where we could chose before and after scans and labeled cases. Can we have the occlusal plane of the virtual articulator match the position of the occlusal plane we set in the Model Analysis step? Often we need to open the VDO arbitrarily for a try-in monoblock case so this would save us a step in having to move the plane into proper position again ... See MoreSee Less
And have it set the position in the virtual articulator as well.
Sometimes it's tough to get a proper connection between the base and the model. In some cases I had to move the base straight to the molar. Wouldn't it be cool to have the option to mark an area and click "connect"!? ... See MoreSee Less
When I look at a case in 3shape communicate portal can I tell if the dr has marked the margins? If so how if not then I suggest that
Thanks
... See MoreSee Less
Happens often to us as well. Doctor calls: did you receive my scan? I look it up in 3ShapeCommunicated portal (website), quality is crap, can't see a thing. Go to DentalSystem, wait for ages for the case to load in 3D preview, can't see margins. Have to accept the case and open it and go through all the initial steps just to see if there's a margin. Combined with the re-sellers telling doctors "don't mark the margins, the lab prefers to do it"...
When importing STLs or complete orders into 3Shape, it seems like the folder gets "locked" and we then cannot rename or move any files for a while. Not sure if it's a 3Shape issue or Windows file system issue, but makes management of our files convoluted. ... See MoreSee Less

The tooth removal part of implant studio is absolutely dire. No bandaid tool, no ability to sculpt the tissue. God forbid there is a black triangle or more than one tooth in a row. I've given up on it. I import the scans into a fake order in dental designer, remove the teeth there and export again. Every tool in every indication anyone? ... See MoreSee Less
You rang?
Also, to allow a change of indication at any time would be nice.
Also, if I could add, it's extra annoying because when you remove a tooth it would be nice to go back and forth with the ct scan to see if you exo you did is reasonable. Too much and your guide with get hung up on bone, too little and the guide will be unnecessarily thin. Now I sometimes have to go back and forth around two different programs and amend the implant studio design to the new models everytime.
And adding a virtual tooth is a pain where you don’t want an implant but need one added to see what sizes spaces etc etc
Adam Stoot 3Shape
We completely recognize the shortcomings of the tooth-removal step, and this is on our list of areas to revisit.

I'm a dentist using ImplantStudio for all my implant planning. With the latest update I cannot make virtual bridge, just virtual crown. Could it be possible to bring back the bridge option in planning?
The only way around currently seems to put virtual crown everywhere but I have to place implants under every tooth. So it create a guide with guide tubes colliding or not being use. With multiple single virtual crown, I'm also unable to move multiple unit together so it become much more work to create these crown in the right position.
Also I would like to be able to send my planning with the virtual teeth to an external lab so they could finalized my design and make an interim printed or milled immediate prosthesis.
Maybe I need Dental system to do what I would like, but I won't be using much of it apart from the virtual bridge option that was in ImplantStudio prior to Unite upgrade.
... See MoreSee Less
I am struggling with the same thing! I just started designing the virtual crowns as temp on prepared in dental designer, combining it with additional scans and importing it in implant studio as a preprep. Not as nice as before, but it does have the benefit that if I need to do an immediate temp or even the final down the road, I can convert the design easily.
I posted about this a month ago and no one responded btw
Birk Ploennigs (adam is not on)
Hi all, my apologies for that error in the software. We are aware of it and working on a solution. I will get back to you tomorrow with an update on the time line.
Hi all, Also sorry from my side about this issue. We have some weeks ago released a temporary fix. When selecting the Implant Studio action, it is possible to add additional virtual crowns (besides the one(s) under the implant(s)) by selecting the single restorations and "crown on prep" - these will be treated as additional virtual crowns. Virtual crowns placed next to each other will act as a virtual bridge, and can be scaled together. A proper fix, where multiple virtual crowns can be added while placing the implant, will be released during the summer, but at least the full functionality is available now using the "crown on prep". Hope this helps!
We used to have this bug upto the DS20 and I wished it would never be fixed but it's gone in the DS21. Can you add this 'No shine' as an option in the future DS? I find it much easier to see the margins with the matt color compared to the shiny color scan. This bug happens when you 'Save' the scan using the 'Addition scans' and 'Load' it back to the order. Pretty simple. This was a HAPPY BUG for me. 🙂 Now I have to 'Save' the scan using the 'Additional scans', then create a new order form using the 'Design Module: DentalDesigner 2020', Open the order, then go through the usual process to create he matt version. 🙁 It's too time consuming. I want this bug back as a new feature!! ... See MoreSee Less

Nice retraction!
I think it can be done, as I recall while ago Lorant Stumpf did some modifications but forgot where, maybe it’s in 3shape study group if you search his posts…
This probably would end up at the very bottom of the 3shape "TO-DO" list. But it would be nice if the 3shape 3d viewer had it's own preview panel plugin so it doesn't break the preview panel in windows. Also would be nice to have a thumbnail generator that would automatically generate thumbnails so you can quickly identify STL/ply/dcm/obj files without having to open them in the 3d preview window ... I mean, free tools like "Papa's best" Thumbnail generator do it really well. It's not out of reach for 3Shape to implement. papas-best.com/stlviewer_en papas-best.com/stlthumbnails_en

We also need those option for copy denture.
Yeah I hate that glitch. The stl that 3shape generates there sometime gets funky with the monoblock.

Paint surface to protect: I know it's been requested here a few times before by many users. But I'll toss it in here again.
Very often, when working on a case like this copy denture with a wash, it would be nice to paint the teeth and cervicals to protect those surfaces from sculpting... and if i want to smooth away excess impression material, or maybe get a bit more artistic with sculpting the base, I can do it a bit more haphazardly without worrying about my teeth.
Not only for this application, but for a few other indications that would really benefit from locking a surface to protect it from my fat-finger tool use

paint and lock the margins so we can remove tissue.
Yes!!!
If scan abutments code for “implant position” why can the system not allow for restoratively driven abutment planning for screw retained restorations.
It would be preferable to design the restoration and select through available abutment systems for that implant system from Any manufacturer DME to make the best choice of abutment from a restorative space, emergence, analog choice, model design etc.
Guessing from digital scans to select parts from limited catalogs is far from ideal. It either decreases outcome or wastes time.
This change would also improve model builder.
Systems with analogs you or your account prefer could be chosen for the model work, abutments chosen for the best clinical result.
The data is all there.
This would be brilliant.

Curious why there is a limit to 10 additional scan files in an order is it a resource thing or???? ... See MoreSee Less
It will overload DS and self destruct.
Probably some variable that has an arbitrary limit of memory allocation
You really tested this?! Good to know!😄
Hm... what could be the reason to have more than 10 scans? And how many are needed? And you're correct, it's all about resources. One TRIOS scan has ~500 000 triangles. 15 scans(2 jaw scans+bite+2 pre-prep scans + 10 additionals scans) in total will have ~750000 triangles. Adding more might decrease fps to a very low values I'm not sure if the most beautifull 3D games have such amount of triangles at the same time drawn in the scene. Because a lot of different techniques are used there for optimisation. E.g LOD(Level of Detail) is a technique of reducing mesh complexity as objects become more distant from the viewer.) developer.arm.com/documentation/102496/0100/Level-of-Detail---LOD

Don’t understand completely, why is 3shape fault if you outsource design and you can correct margin etc? That is designers job…
And also you wrote in 3shape group you are looking for a designer, so can you explain what exact suggestion you have or this post has no sense…sorry…
What errors? Fixing a margin line on a two unit case is easy peasy. Maybe if you post them we can help you figure it out
It would be great if the trimmed part of scan on full dentures could become the base of the denture automatically.
This would save lots of time on creating a new spline as well as in sculpting stage.
Also ensures the best possible fit.

I wish copy and append to cad design would remove the separation between the crown and the model and just generate a solid shell. Tiny annoying thing about model builder that's always bothered me. If you ever need to go back to redesign/step backwards
It always changes the value of the text depth into a positive value, so instead of embossing the text, it becomes positive. Just set it in your material settings

Thumb up for B4D. Incredibly fast software improvement.
Good
Blender for dental is the only dental software that teaches you about meshs and how to use meshs how to correct mesh. editing verticies and faces.. 3 shape has been out for over 20 years and doesn't teach any of their technicians nor any of their 3rd party technicians about mesh meshes and how a mesh can become distorted from an oral scan or from a desktop scanner And how to fix those meshes so that the 3 shapes software doesn't lock up on you when you're doing a big case. Again blender for dental is the only dental CAD software true CAD software that educates you on how to fix mesh verticies. 3shape none exocad teach you any of that. 3 shaped came out in I think 2007 2008 and it wasn't until what 20 years later they finally have a mesh correctioning. 3 shape is just a graphical user interface to make it easy for anybody to design any type of case you don't even have to be a certified dental technician you can be somebody off the street and make any type of Crown or case using 3 shape. So what I'm saying is you need less experience to use X ocad or 3 shapes software then you do blender you need more cad experience and understanding from a engineering standpoint.

The "mirror tool" wouldn't apply to frames because there is no set ratio for pontic size. It also doesn't apply to temps because of the same fact that there is little margin data.

Would be nice if we had the option to batch-modify and assign operators by shift+selecting cases and then right clicking to assign an operator for multiple cases.
Would be a very quick way of tracking designer productivity if our designers could just right click and highlight their recents for the day on their station and assign operator. Currently it's possible, but you have to do it on a single case-by-case basis by right clicking each individual one
Especially useful if you are compensating per design, but also useful if you want to use the data for performance reports or easy tracking of who designed what in the event of a remake situation

Can we get a reduction jig for carded teeth. Milled and printed teeth are fine, but aesthetically a carded, layered, cross-linked denture tooth is much better looking.

There are some patents surrounding this from various companies, wouldn't be surprised if that's the reason why it isn't available. Can we get a final sculpt for monoblock dentures? For cases like this, where we want to pick up temp cylinders for a try-in, punching holes using the parametric shapes>cylinder hole would make things much quicker than having to bring this into copy denture
Or sometimes when we finish the monoblock, there's a spot I see that just needs to be sculpted a bit, but often I won't bother because going back to sculpt teeth/gingiva will throw the coupling step and waste so much time re-calculating the assembly even though there's no assembly for monoblocks

It would be really swell to have an option to have the die direction copy the insertion direction. For people like me who only print solids and dies I don't care at all for having the dies be in the base, but I do care if the angle between the die and the die base is acute. or perhaps allow cad points
I will be so mad if they finally do that after I bought it.. Whenever I brought it up with 3shape they seemed to have no intentions in doing it.
I actually prefer the $600. That’s only 10 exports from Straumann coDx
If you need to export from bluesky, I can help you at a lower cost. I have several exports that I no longer use.
yes please! for single implants I likes implant studio more. For anything more complex - not only exports but the whole workflow for BSB wins : ) also just looking how fast BSB evolves puts expensive implant studio to shame 🙁
We are looking into relevant models. If you do the math BSB is more expensive if you just do a decent amount of guides, but obviously upfront cost is higher
Okay but shells from BSB make me cry... a lot of spare triangles, sleeves angles completely distorted.... I think the quality of the software is not comparable....
So you can down load the software for free
Hey why does the morph to preprep smooth over the details so much? Why can't we have a preprep copy that is lossless in detail? ... See MoreSee Less
If we stop to think about how amazing it is that we can even do that with as much accuracy as we can… it’s pretty impressive But I agree, copying triangles should be essentially lossless *in theory*

It is possible to define thickness during desing, required value could be set at Denture base step at Base thickness value

Working on this case here with some zest anchors for a denture that will be picked up chairside. So if i could just select the locator and housing, attach that to the model from my preliminary setup, and sculpt a bit around it in order to create a little extra room for pickup material to flow, it would make things super quick.

I spent many a hours trying to get a system for it too. Wanted my printed dentures to have the housings cut out for inserts to be put in to try out before a milled final. Was able to do it but the time spent was too much. Was fun when it worked though
Yes please
Not going back all the way for things, sound like “Expert mode” 🙏
I know they working hard on it in the new version Better options to use attachments for overdentures
It would be so good to be able to change the nesting position of ivotion at any time.
Specially at the end of design.

1. Would be nice to skip the coupling step in ivotion as there is no coupling really happening. It just waits time
Funny thing is you even get coupling errors quite often.
2. In copy denture I wish I could create a protected surface area so I could modify the rest of the areas without accidentally changing the fitting surface for example.
3. Please allow ivotion nesting process at the end of any design. This way we could use in copy denture and other applications much easier.

Denture designer suggestion
Allow us to make the connectors less than 70-70-60
OR
Allow the sculpt tool to reduce JUST the connector in the next step to protect the anatomy of the teeth. Much like the tools can do in C&B module when you are using a specific preset like sculpt to antagonist or sculpt to contact

John Wilson, are printing or milling? I ask because if printing it makes sense. If milling it really doesn't because it is a 1mm burr milling those areas and it won't get into there (unless you are using a custom strategy that utilizes the 0.5mm burr or some third Party burrs).
Yep, or like I suggested a couple of weeks ago, no connectors at all and still be able to mill them bridged.
OR… just let me intersect designed teeth like I do in C&B and don’t tell me what to do with my connectors, you’re not my mother😂

💯
The old switcheroo: give me denture transform tools so I can move upper and lower arches in perfect occlusion simultaneously in the crown and bridge design module.
On these larger full-mouth diagnostics, having the teeth come in already in occlusion and moving them arbitrarily so we can assess the need to open VDO and advising how much preparation of tooth structure may be needed would make my life so much easier and save me so much time.

Love this shortcut. Will Varda. Why would you double click the model if you don’t want the articulator activated. Make smith. It would be cool if the user could customize the shortcut when double clicking though.
Dear 3shape, allow me to formally recant my suggestion. Clearly I am out of touch with the demographic and need mouse clicking lessons or less coffee. Thank you. Will
In the denture module when using the gingivator, i would love to use different setting for the front six or even front eight and have a different setting for the posterior region. Dentures are supposed to be self cleansing by nature especially since one of the functions of the buccinator muscle is to push food around clean the sides of the cheek area. That being said it would be extremely benificial to set heavy festooning “like” settings with gingivator for the front and a more soft setting for the posterior. Maybe even something like the presets of the waxknife. Also it would be nice to be able to tilt the directions of the root eminence ... See MoreSee Less

Would be awesome to have a drop down in the order form to add a category icon to aid us in managing cases. We could then sort by a color icon and or group cases based on need. I have always advocated a folder based system to organise items better and now with 4 different portals it's becoming quite taxing managing the workflow. Cases are easily mismanaged when its grouped they way they are today. ... See MoreSee Less

Heavily staggered teeth are almost impossible to do in the denture module without heavy modification of the teeth size and where they touch, because it won't generate the connectors. I'm not sure how to solve this, but maybe an on the fly option to have no connectors in certain areas and mill them still as a bridged section like in the crown and bridge module. I had them heavier staggered than this, but it was impossible to generate connectors. Thx. ... See MoreSee Less
